The second legs of the quarter-finals of this year’s UEFA Europa League 2024 were played out across Europe today. Eight teams were battling it out for a place in the final four of the competition. The first legs were amazing and the fans have been anticipating seeing the teams in action over the past week.

Liverpool who were humbled last week at home against Atalanta BC in the first-leg started off the proceedings in Italy. They were quick to get the first goal of the second-leg as Salah converted a crucial penalty during the 7th minute. However, the exciting contest continued as both teams were testing the defence and the keeper on every occasion that they got.

The six-time Champions League winners still needed two more goals in the second half to force the game into extra-time. Atalanta were vary of the English team’s attacks but their constant counter-attacks did not let Liverpool dominate the match completely. The Italian side marched onto the next round as they were able to knock-out the English Premier League giants.

During the game between West Ham United and Bayer Leverkusen, Michael Antonio got the goal in the first half to keep his team alive for some more time in the competition. The home side needed another goal to level the tie on aggregate and were trying their best to break through the solid. But Jeremie Frimpong made sure of his side’s unbeaten run in the tournament as he scored a late goal to kill the tie. Xabi Alonso and his side are now through to the semifinals of this year’s UEFA Europa League.

What happened in the other two quarter-final matches?

In the all-Italian affair between AS Roma and AC Milan, the one goal by Gianluigi Mancini separated the sides in the first-leg in Milan. The centre-back opened the scoring once again for the hosts in this game and Paulo Dybala added another in the first half to give the hosts a 3-0 lead on aggregate.

However, the tie turned on its head as Zeki Celick got a straight red card in the 31st minute which gave some hope to the visitors that they can still comeback in the match. But the solid Roma defence made sure of the victory despite a late goal from Matteo Gabbia as they advanced to the semi-finals of the tournament.

The final quarter-final saw Olympique Marseille hosting Benfica in the second-leg of their quarter-final clash. Benfica had the lead after the first leg and were keeping the scoreline level for most of the game. A goal from Faris Moumbanga in the 79th minute levelled the tie on aggregate and it was anyone’s game from there. Extra-time also could not seperate the two teams in this game and it was onto penalties to decide the final semi-finalist. The hosts go through after Angel Di Maria and Antonio Silva miss their strikes from the penalty spot.
