Even if Erik ten Hag, the current Manchester United manager, has garnered more trust and support than he did during his own stint, Jose Mourinho still wants the team to succeed. During the inaugural season at Old Trafford, Mourinho won the UEFA Europa League and the Carabao Cup. The next season, he placed second in the English Premier League.

However, following a string of disappointing performances, the Portuguese, who had a tense professional relationship alongside former Man Utd chief executive Ed Woodward, was fired in December 2018. But in the previous five and a half years, Man Utd's destiny have not changed. Since then, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left the team in 2022, and Ralf Rangnick took over as interim manager. Erik Ten Hag serves as the third coach to lead the team.

The former AS Roma manager spoke to Telegraph as he said, "My relationship with Ed Woodward was good - good as in the personal point of view. But from a professional point of view it was not the best. "I am who I am. I am a football man. Ed comes from a different background and what Ten Hag has in his time at Manchester United I didn't have. I didn't have that level of support. I didn't have that level of trust.”

He added, "So I left sad, because I felt I was in the beginning of the process. In some moments, I felt if they trusted me and believed in my experience things could be different."

The 61-year-old continued by saying that certain players from his team don't have the professionalism needed to represent a team that wants to compete with the best in the world.

The Portuguese manager added, "There are a couple of players still there I didn't want five or six years ago. I think they represent a little bit what I consider not the best professional profile to a club of a certain dimension. But I did my job there. Time always tells the truth. I would love Manchester United to succeed."
