In a recent piece of news, the former England international John Fanashu has filed a sue against the Nigerian Police Force (NPF). He has sued the Nigerian Police for Euro 100,000 after he was arrested by the force on multiple charges and allegations. The charges that were treated as the ‘grounds’ to arrest Fanashu involved criminal conspiracy, threat to die, intimidation, and trespassing.
Furthermore, the former striker claimed that all the allegations were ‘false’ and ‘baseless’. Notably, it was a dispute over land that involved a couple of investors. In the same line of events, the investors consented to pay around Euro 500,000 for the 22-acre plot.
"Police constantly violated my rights" - John Fashanu
A report in the Mirror understands that ‘after a hearing and questioning with the contractors, police arrested Fashanu; it was also understood that the contractors were developing the fences on the land that was registered in his name’.
“Me, my wife and my lawyer were subjected to arrest, detention, and inhuman treatment for about three hours,” claimed Fashanu last year on December 16, 2024.
“Police constantly violated my rights through the subsequent intermittent constraints on my liberty and gross unconstitutional violation,” he added later while accusing the police.
Apart from Fashanu’s claims, his lawyer also came up with a confirmation that “All three have met their bail conditions and have been admitted to administrative bail by the police.”
Talking about John Fashanu’s professional career, he played a total of 315 matches, scoring 116 goals, 8 assists and two unfortunate own goals. He played the most number of matches (204) in the First Division, alongside 78 games played in the Premier League. Besides these, he also played 23 matches in the FA Cup, alongside 7 in the EFL Cup and a game each in the UEFA Cup, Community Shield, and First Division.
The next hearing in John Fashanu’s ‘land dispute’ is yet to be announced by the court following a questioning with the Nigerian Police Force on the former footballer's allegations.
