Enzo Maresca is maintaining a cautious stance regarding Chelsea's title ambitions, emphasising that his team is still in the process of developing before they can truly compete for the championship. Following Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Brentford, Chelsea has positioned itself in a strong second place, just two points shy of league leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.
Maresca's run of seven consecutive victories is beginning to challenge his previous stance that Chelsea isn't a title contender. He acknowledges that while discussions about the title are valid and fans are entitled to dream, he has his own perspective. If asked, he will clearly state what he believes, acknowledging that fan opinions may differ.
The Reason why Maresca feels so
The manager firmly stated that Chelsea is not yet meeting his expectations, highlighting the poorly conceded goals and the evident lack of control in their performance.
These remarks followed Chelsea’s concession of a late consolation goal to Bryan Mbeumo, whose netted a goal in the 90th minute.
“You can talk about the title, and the fans, they can dream about the title absolutely. If you ask me, I tell you what I think, and you can think in a different way," Maresca said.
“Just because there are things that I think no matter how many games we win, for me we are not ready, but we are happy that the fans, they can dream something more,” he added.
“One of the reasons why is that I think that teams that know how to compete to win the title are not going to concede the goals that we concede. We concede the goal on 90 minutes; throw in for us, we concede a goal. A team that knows how to win the title, that goal they are not going to concede," he added
“I don’t know if you don’t believe me or think that I told you that many times that I would love the pressure to compete for title, but we are not ready for many reasons. One of the reasons why is because we cannot concede the goals we concede, open the game, and give them the chance to take a point here,” he concluded.
He confidently stated that he was excited to see fans in the stands acknowledging the club’s progress as chants of his name echoed in the stadium.
