La Liga president Javier Tebas has given an update on the potential return of Lionel Messi and Neymar to Barcelona, a prospect that excites many fans. Both players enjoyed an impressive four-year stint at Camp Nou before Neymar made headlines with his world-record transfer to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017. In a significant move, four years later, Messi joined him in the French capital after his contract with Barcelona came to an end.
In 2023, the duo changed their allegiances from PSG. While Messi made his way to the United States to join David Beckham-owned Inter Miami, Neymar signed with Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal. However, Neymar's journey in the Middle East was short-lived; in January, he returned to his boyhood club Santos on a six-month deal.
There are strong indications that Neymar may make a move back to Europe this summer, with Barcelona being a potential destination. Likewise, Messi has also been speculated to return to Spain on a temporary deal later this year.
Javier Tebas shares his opinion on possibility of Messi and Neymar returning to Laliga
La Liga president Tebas asserts that Messi is eager to return to Barcelona, a club where he spent numerous years of his career. He believes that Messi will make his comeback, whether as a player or in another capacity. The connection between Messi and Barcelona is undeniable; they are intrinsically linked. Tebas feels Messi’s love for the club is profound. In contrast, Tebas is certain that Neymar will never return to Barcelona.
"I think Messi wants to go back to Barcelona. He spent lots of years there. I am quite sure Messi will come back. Maybe as a player, but I can see him returning in another capacity as well. Messi and Barcelona go hand in hand. His brand, and Barcelona's brand, are in many ways one and the same. He is in love with the club. Neymar is a different story. I don't think he will ever return to Barcelona. I am quite sure of that," Tebas said.
Messi and Neymar's return to the club is purely speculative at this point, as Hansi Flick's team is laser-focused on clinching the league title this season. They currently sit at the top of the table and are set to take on Real Sociedad this Sunday.
