Lionel Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, made a shocking move to the United States in 2023 after concluding his contract with Paris Saint-Germain. He joined Inter-Miami as a free agent.

Messi Elevated Inter-Miami and MLS

Messi's arrival has been transformative for both the team and Major League Soccer (MLS), showcasing his competitive spirit while also elevating the league's profile. Each match he participates in creates considerable excitement, leading to a high demand for tickets and attracting numerous high-profile guests eager to witness his talent firsthand.

Inter Miami co-president Xavier Asensi recently noted that during a debate at the College of Economists of Catalonia Lionel Messi's impact on Major League Soccer (MLS) can be compared to that of NBA legend Michael Jordan.

Messi marked a pivotal moment for the league, transforming how fans engaged with the sport. Regardless of their team loyalties, many people attended matches solely to witness Messi's extraordinary talent. His presence truly set a new standard, much like Jordan did in basketball.

How did Messi turn Miami's Fortunes?

Lionel Messi's arrival at Inter Miami has completely transformed the team's fortunes, leading to a historic Leagues Cup victory shortly after he joined. This has set the stage for an exciting pursuit of MLS Cup glory, especially after securing the Supporters’ Shield in 2024.

In a sport where it can be challenging to measure an individual’s impact, Miami's remarkable turnaround clearly illustrates Messi's significance, beyond what statistics alone can convey. His leadership and ways to connect with the team and elevate the performance of his teammates are beyond explanation.

When Messi joined Miami in 2023, the team was struggling, sitting at the dead end of the league with just 18 points from 22 MLS matches. Inter Miami held the 29th spot out of 29 teams in the MLS, facing issues everywhere.

Fast forward 1.5 years, and Inter Miami finished the season in 1st place, setting a new record for the most points in MLS history.

During Messi's time with the team, Miami dominated Concacaf, establishing itself as the top contender. They secured a remarkable victory in their final regular season match, finishing with an impressive total of 74 points—surpassing the previous record of 73 set by New England in 2021.

Lionel Messi, who entered the game as a substitute in the 58th minute, made an immediate and significant impact, leading a late surge of goals. With 20 goals in just 19 appearances in MLS, his performance has been nothing short of extraordinary.
