UEFA Champions League 2023/24 will be the last edition of the older format of the league where 32 teams have participated drawn in eight groups of four. The European competition is in the business end of the tournament with only two teams remain Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund who will face in the final of the marquee club tournament at iconic Wembley stadium. From the next season there will be 36 clubs in the competition.

The new format will see have eight matches between teams. They will no longer play three opponents twice in the home and away format, but will instead face eight different clubs, with half of those matches played at home and half away. To determine the eight different opponents, the teams will first be seeded in four pots. Each side will then be assigned two opponents from each pot, playing one match at home and one away. 

Pot 1 will include the UCL champions and the eight clubs with the best coefficients. This means that the top domestic league champions and UEL titleholders will no longer be given priority in Pot 1. Pots 2 to 4 are ranked by club coefficient. Clubs from Italy and Germany will have an extra spot for the tournament with 5 teams qualifying. 

Qualification scenario's in European Competition

As Dortmund are in the final of the tournament and they are fifth in the league table of the Bundesliga and if they wins the tournament would qualify as holders, the top four as normal, and then the next best-placed German team as well that is currently Eintracht Frankfurt. The other factor is if Borussia win the Champions League and finish in the top four, their berth as holders is passed to another country. 

As of now there are three teams from England that have secured their places in the UCL. Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool have qualified but the fourth spot for there are two teams that are competing however, Aston Villa are favuorites need three more points from their final two games to join them. But the fifth place in the Premier League will qualify for next season's Europa League, with the team moving directly into the new league phase without having to play any more qualifying or play-off games. However, there is a second Europa League spot open, which United might take.
