Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal began their UEFA Euro 2024 journey today against the Czech Republic at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig. A lot of expectations have been jammed on the shoulders of Cristiano Ronaldo to lead Portugal to another European Championship title. The 39-year-old has the highest number of goals on the international stage and would be looking to add a few more in this tournament.

The Czech Republic knew from the start that they would have to play their hearts out if they wanted to salvage something from the game. They wanted to get an early goal and were attacking for the first ten minutes or so. Then the Portugal players settled into the game and dominated the ball. Most of the play was happening in the opposition half, much to the delight of Portugal.

Roberto Martinez was playing a unique formation with three centre-back and two full-backs to provide cover in both defence and attack. They had a creative midfield with Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva producing chances for Rafael Leao and Cristiano Ronaldo up top. Particularly, Bruno Fernandes and Ronaldo were looking lethal as they were combining well and causing all kinds of trouble to the Czechia defence.

How did the second half of the game between Czech Republic and Portugal pan out?

Once again, Portugal started off brightly but were lacking the cutting edge that was needed to get them the goal. The Czech Republic defence looked solid and were looking for openings on the attack. The substitutions worked for them very well as they got the opener in the game courtesy a beautiful strike from Provod from range.ย

However, the lead lasted only seven minutes as Portugal got the equaliser courtesy of an own goal from Robin Hranac. The header from Mendes created chaos and confusion between the defender and goalkeeper and ultimately they lost their lead. Portugal had a goal disallowed as Ronaldo was deemed offside in the buildup. Portugal substitute Fransisco Conceicao got the decisive goal in the first minute of stoppage time and once again it was Hranac's mistake that led to the goal. Portugal got the win eventually and have all three points to thier name now
