Following their 1-0 loss at Anfield to Crystal Palace, managed by Oliver Glasner, Liverpool has now relinquished points in their title chase in two straight English Premier League games. With six league games left in the 2023–24 season, Jurgen Klopp and company have everything to play for, tied with Arsenal and with a game remaining against the Reds.
Within 14 minutes, one of the bright spots on the visiting team, Eberechi Eze, opened the score. Olise sent the ball in Mitchell's direction on the byline as Palace got off to a strong start and collaborated excellently on the left. After the defender passed it back towards Eze, who slotted home, the players in white and blue, notably custodian Dean Henderson, celebrated heartily.
Oliver Glasner's team was able to withstand the pressure and come away unharmed despite a flurry of shots being fired towards the Crystal Palace goal. In the second half, Jean-Philippe Mateta additionally had an opportunity to extend Palace's lead, but Alisson's strong, outstretched arm stopped him.
How did Liverpool miss out on equalising against Crystal Palace?
If there was one moment that best summed up the host's afternoon against Glasner's team, it was Curtis Jones' costly error in the second half. In the seventieth minute, the hosts had taken back control of the ball near the centre of the field.
A plethora of red Liverpool players surged forward, hoping to force an equaliser, however Cody Gakpo chose to give the ball to Jones, who was breaking along the right side with plenty of room to run. With Adam Wharton chasing him, the Englishman raced through on goal and squandered his opportunity to tie the score, his shot going past Henderson and the goal frame.
As the Palace supporters erupted in applause, Jurgen Klopp appeared distressed on the sidelines, realising that Jones' moment would be their best chance to take control of the match. Both Jones and the German tactician were unable to contain their shock and had to shield their eyes.
