Marcelo's contract has finally been signed after he was benched during Fluminense's 2-2 draw against Gremio. After an unprecedented altercation with his manager, Real Madrid legend Marcelo's contract at his boyhood club was terminated.
During his 15 years with Los Blancos, Marcelo became one of the greatest left-backs in football history, winning six La Liga championships and five UEFA Champions Leagues. Before making a spectacular comeback to Fluminense, where he has played 68 games and captured the Copa Libertadores, he briefly played for Olympiacos in Greece after leaving in 2022.
However, the 36-year-old's second spell ended in a very negative way. Reinaldo's penalty in the 99th minute gave Fluminense a 2-2 draw with Gremio during the Brazilian top division on Saturday.
With the home team ahead 2-1, Marcelo was scheduled to enter as a replacement as stoppage time drew near. Manager Mano Menezes yelled at him as he was undressed and prepared to play, then shoved him away and told him to sit down again.
Marcelo later went back to the sidelines and placed his bib back on, raising suspicions that he was not following the coach's instructions. Fans responded strongly to the scenes, which were unlike anything they had ever seen.
Fluminense terminate contract of Brazil left-back Marcelo
However, Marcelo's situation worsened because it turned out to be his last performance wearing a Fluminense shirt. The club stated in a statement that his contract had been terminated with mutual consent.
The statement read, "Fluminense FC and Marcelo Vieira announce the termination of the contract by mutual agreement between the parties. Trained in the youth categories, Marcelo returned to Fluminense in 2023, having participated in the conquest of the 2023 Campeonato Carioca titles, the unprecedented 2023 Conmebol Libertadores titles and the 2024 Recopa.
It added, "The institutional and emotional ties between Fluminense and Marcelo continue to be maintained. The athlete's name was recently immortalized in the stadium at the Xerém training center. Fluminense thanks Marcelo and will continue, as always, to support his success in all his challenges."
