The last round of the UEFA Champions League 2nd leg quarter-final was held on Wednesday, with reigning champions Manchester City hosting Real Madrid and in the other game Bayern Munich facing off against Arsenal at the Allianz Arena. The 1st leg of both the games ended in draws. City was held on by Madrid in a 3-3 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu and Arsenal had a 2-2 draw against the Bavarians. In the 2nd leg to play for all the four clubs, Bayern fans created an amazing atmosphere at their home ground.
Real after soaking in the pressure the visitors opened the scoring with Rodrygo scoring in the 12th minute. City were brilliant after conceding the goal in the first half with Erling Haaland creating some opportunities as his header hit the crossbar and bounced out hitting Bernardo Silva’s knee who had an open goal in front of him. At the Allianz Arena, the Gunners had the better chances in the first half but failed to convert them.
Bayern started the second half the opposite way as they piled up the pressure and broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute after Joshua Kimmich ran unmarked in the box and headed it to the right top corner. The Gunners had the chances of scoring but failed to do so and Kimmich’s goal turned out to be the winner of the game as they qualified for the semi-finals.
Andriy Lunin; a new hero for Real Madrid
On the other end City equalised with Kevin De Bruyne as the Belgian was brilliant throughout the game and arrived for the team when his team needed him the most. The game went into the extra time as the home side kept on piling the pressure. They earned 18 corners and had 33 shots compared to Madrid who had 1 corner and had 8 shots. But none had the chance to find the winner after 120 minutes of the game.
The game went on to the penalties with Julian Alvarez scoring from the spot and then Ederson saving the first shot of Luka Modric, then Andriy Lunin made two back to back saves for the side, with Bernardo Silva striking straight to the gloves of the keeper and Mateo Kovacic's shot was saved and helped the Los Blancos to qualify for the last four as they will meet Bayern Munich.
