Despite the team's lowest-ever Premier League result of eighth, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will remain in charge for next season and has begun negotiations with the Old Trafford club about extending his contract, according to British media.

The decision follows an end-of-season evaluation by the club's board for the 2023-24 season, which culminated in a stunning FA Cup final victory against Manchester City. Ten Hag's contract is set to expire at the end of next season, with the club able to extend it for another year.

After United, the 20-time English champions lost eight of their first 15 games in all competitions, they had their worst start to a season since 1962–1963. Ten Hag, the former coach of Ajax Amsterdam, has come under increasing pressure.

They finished ninth with 14 losses in 38 league games and were eliminated from the Champions League in the group round. Ten Hag's job security had been a source of concern all season, and many experts predicted that the FA Cup final would be the Dutchman's last game with the club, win or lose.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson departed, Erik ten Hag was seventh manager

According to India Today, "I'm in a project and we are exactly where we want to be. We're constructing a team. When I took over it was a mess at United, and we are on our way to construct a team for the future," he told reporters at Wembley.

"The team is developing, the team is winning and the team also plays to an identity. What you need to play is to be available, you need a strong squad in top football, and especially when you play in England, the Premier League is so competitive."

Thomas Tuchel and England manager Gareth Southgate are two coaches who have been linked to the role as prospective successors. Ten Hag is United's seventh permanent manager since Alex Ferguson departed in 2013, as the club looks for someone to take them back to their glory days. He led United to third place in the league during his rookie season.
