According to the club announcement, Erik ten Hag has been fired by Manchester United with immediate effect, and Ruud Van Nistelrooy will take over as temporary manager. The Red Devils are currently in the bottom portion of the standings in the Premier League after a poor year, and their loss to West Ham United was the beginning of the end. Even in the UEFA Europa League, the Red Devils have not been able to register a single win from their opening three games of the season.
Even though the Red Devils won the FA Cup the previous season, ten Hag has had a difficult few years. It's hard to make the case that Erik ten Hag deserves to be allowed to stay in his position given that it was Manchester United's worst-ever Premier League result. This term, he was given opportunities to improve things, but they are still having trouble, and he has failed to do so.
The club statement said that, "Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager. Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.
Ruud van Nistelrooy to take over as Interim manager
The English Premier League club added in their statement that, “Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited."
With Ruud van Nistelrooy now taking charge of the team temporarily, it will be interesting to see whether he can stake his claim to be permanent manager. The former United striker has previously worked as a manager during his time at PSV Eindhoven but took on the role of one of ten Hag's coaches to be able to join the Red Devils.
