Erik ten Hag close to sack

Even after Manchester United held Aston Villa for a draw on Sunday afternoon, Erik ten Hag's managerial future remains very much in doubt. Manchester United has won just two of its first seven Premier League games this season, which is a startling start to the current campaign. Following ties against FC Twente and Porto, the Red Devils are likewise without a win in the Europa League.

The management of Manchester United is apparently planning to meet 48 hours following today's game at Villa Park due to increasing doubts regarding Ten Hag's future with the team. Graham Potter, Thomas Tuchel, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Gareth Southgate, and others have been connected to the position should the Dutchman lose it.

Erik ten Hag spoke to the media after the game against Aston Villa as he said, “We always speak. We speak every week. We are all on board, together, on one page. We know what we are working to, it is a long-term project. We have to keep improving. We proved in two very tough away games that this is a team. We showed our togetherness, our spirit, but also the belief and faith we have.”

After today's stalemate at Villa Park, Manchester United's record after seven matches in the Premier League this season is merely eight points. The Red Devils' performance at this point in the league season is the lowest they have been since 1989–1990 (7), when they placed 13th in the former First Division.

“We were perhaps defensive-minded” : Jonny Evans

Before the game, there was a lot of discussion around Jonny Evans's selection as part of the Manchester United starting lineup. However, the 36-year-old delivered a confident defensive performance to guarantee a clean sheet and win Man of the Match.

After receiving the award, Jonny Evans said, “It wasn't perfect. We didn't pass the ball as well as we would have liked to, but we've got a point against a very good side away from home. After conceding three in Europe, we were perhaps defensive-minded and hoped to catch them on the counter-attack which we nearly did at the end.”
