Dani Carvajal, the veteran of Real Madrid, is a remote candidate for this year's Ballon d'Or and is unlikely to be replaced at right-back for some time, however the 32-year-old has thought about where he might head after Los Blancos.

Carvajal is second in line for the captaincy behind Luka Modric and has played his whole career at Real Madrid, with the exception of one season at Bayer Leverkusen. When asked if Toni Kroos' choice of hanging up his boots at barely two years elder than him had caused him to think about it, Carvajal replied in the negative when speaking at the Spain camp.

In an interview with the Athletic, the Real Madrid right-back said, “I have until next summer on my contract. I’m not considering retirement at the moment. I talk about it with my family: I want to enjoy every game, every training session. As the years go by, you realise you have to give more value to every moment and enjoy it.

He won't, however, face Los Blancos in the UEFA Champions League. Joining Major League Soccer in the United States was not something that Carvajal was against.

During the interview, he also acknowledged that he would have preferred he had changed his diet and training regimen earlier in his professional career. Following a vegan diet, Carvajal has been able to steer clear of the injury problems that have dogged him over the past few years and has recovered to rank among the world's finest right-backs.

He said, “The relationship I have with the club is very transparent, very clear. If both parties agree to continue, I hope to stay here for many years. It’s a possibility. When I decide not to be at Real Madrid, I’m not going to play in Europe and the alternatives are much reduced. Exactly, it would be one of those three options.”
