Manchester United defeated Athletic Bilbao 3-0 on the road on Thursday, May 1, thanks to three goals in the first half, moving them one step closer to securing their place in this season's Europa League final. In front of their home fans on Thursday, Bilbao gave up after Casemiro's strike in the 30th minute, and a brace from captain Bruno Fernandes was plenty for United.
Even though United had a goal disallowed early on for offside, the home team initially led the game at San Memes. Early on, Iñaki Williams had the finest opportunity to put Bilbao ahead, but Victor Lindelöf saved the visitors twice to preserve the score at 0-0. But United seized the lead practically against the flow of play when Harry Maguire's cross found its way to Casemiro, who headed in from close range.
Shortly after, defender Vivian took down Rasmus Hojlund inside the area, awarding United a penalty. After a protracted VAR review, the referee awarded the spot kick and dismissed the Bilbao defender for his infraction. Fernandes put it in to make it 2-0 before a well-executed team goal at the end of halftime ended the match and perhaps the tie.
Manchester United gets advantage before second leg
In the second half, Casemiro had a chance to score a fourth goal when his header slid against the post, but United made sure the match was over before the second leg the following week. After losing Dani Vivian, who received a red card, Athletic Bilbao found it difficult to create opportunities for themselves. United also maintained a solid defence, with Lisandro Martinez and Maguire playing key roles in securing a clean sheet. Bruno’s team is in a strong position to get to the final with a great 3-0 aggregate and the return leg match at Old Trafford.
