Star centre-forward Antoine Griezmann recently equalled Lionel Messi’s highest La Liga appearance record with his recent appearance in the Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona clash on March 16. The French international has played most of the time in his senior team appearances playing for multiple clubs across the different Spanish leagues.
He started his journey with Real Sociedad Academy followed by his first-ever appearance for the senior team in 2009. Five years later in 2014, he moved to Los Colchoneros, where he stayed for five years till 2019. Furthermore, he moved to Barcelona, where he played alongside Lionel Messi.
Griezmann’s stint with Barcelona lasted for three years from 2019 to 2022 before he came back to Los Colchoneros in 2022. Since then, he has been active for Atletico Madrid in the premier Spanish League La Liga.
When the 33-year-old took the field for Atletico in the game against Barcelona, it was his 520th La Liga appearance. However, it didn’t end as a memorable one for him as his side lost by a 2-4 margin to Barcelona.
With this appearance, he has equalled the record of the highest La Liga appearances as a foreign player (520) with the Argentine legend and former Barcelona winger Lionel Messi. In his 520 appearances, Antoine Griezmann has scored 198 goals, alongside 95 assists being one of the vital cogs in the wheel for all the clubs he has played so far.
Speaking of Messi, he has been one of the legends in the Spanish League, with 474 goals, with 216 assists in the same number of matches as compared to Griezmann.
Apart from this, there are a few records in the history of La Liga that are registered to the name of former Barcelona legend Messi. These records include the most wins, most goals, most assists, most hat-tricks, most goals in a season, most games with a goal.
