The PlayStation State of Play did not bring what fans were anticipating, but there were a few interesting games, one of which was ‘Tides of Annihilation’. In the announcement trailer, the game showcased a fantasy world set in London after a strange event. A day later, gamers got the first look at early gameplay footage featuring company and puzzles.

In the 11-minute-long gameplay trailer, people got to see what seems like the opening section of the game. It would be a lie to say that the world didn’t feel like something inspired by Souls games, especially Elden Ring; however, there were a lot more elements, even if it was an early build of the game.

The world also seems to be reactive rather than just there for the show, as one section saw the main character ‘Gwendolyn’ navigate through an environment that was constantly changing; hopefully, there will be more of that. There are checkpoints across the areas where players can rest and heal, along with puzzle sections and the UI also looks clean.

Hack and Slash combat makes things interesting

Throughout the journey, players are joined by a bird companion and knights, which will aid players in battle. With the theme of the game, it may seem like it plays slowly, similar to many Souls games, but that’s not the case. The combat is quite rapid and felt like straight out of Devil May Cry or rather Bayonetta due to the female protagonist, with quick swaps between knights to chain combos.

There are some rough edges in terms of animation, and a few other things seem missing if players look closely; however, Tides of Annihilation gets a pass. This was an early development build and will likely look a lot different with the release. The combat looked flashy and there are a lot of huge bosses in the trailer to look forward to.

Is Tides of Annihilation worth trying?

There is currently no release date or even a window so it’s safe to say the game may take its sweet time to come out. As for the game being worth a play, the gameplay looks interesting, and if the story hits the mark, which is often a weak point in these types of games, it’ll be worth trying out.
