To no one’s surprise, another great year for gaming has also turned out to be an all-time high video game release on Steam. Not only that, as per SteamDB, the number was significantly higher compared to the previous year. The current count of Steam releases stands at 18,949, compared to 14,310 throughout 2023.
Since 2019, the video game release count on Steam has been steadily increasing thanks to the COVID pandemic. However, the numbers took off this year, and while a lot of the games might simply be shovelware games made using stock assets for a quick buck, they are games.

Not only did Steam see an incredible spike in the number of games, the platform also saw an all-time high for the number of gamers. This further goes on to show how dominant Steam current is in the PC gaming sphere, despite having a lot of competition.

Will 2025 be another record-breaking year for Steam?
While 2024 was huge, as the numbers reveal, 2025 is shaping up to be even bigger. The first month of 2K25 is filled with some of the most popular franchises, including Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Spider-Man 2, Sniper Elite: Resistance, and more.
February is also set to follow the same pattern with Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Monster Hunter Wilds, Assassin's Creed Shadows, and Sid Meier's Civilisation VII. There are a lot of games that are yet to reveal their release dates, like Elden Ring, Nightreign, and Borderlands 4. There is also the wait for GTA 6, although PC gamers will most likely have to wait longer.
Despite so many new releases, the 2024 Steam year in review revealed that most of the gamers were left playing catch-up. The majority of the gamers this year were playing games released in the past few years.
