The International Olympic Committee, during their 142nd session, have now provided a green light to the Olympic Esports Games. This decision came as a unanimous vote from the committee members and with the creation of the Olympic Esports Games, the first event will be taking place alongside the 2024 Olympic Games and will be hosted by Saudi Arabia.

The creation of the Olympic Esports Games was brought up by IOC President Thomas Bach and was likely taken after the rise in popularity of Esports and how successful the Olympic Esports Week was. With this, esports will now officially be a part of the Olympics.

Once again, the majority of the fans seem indifferent to the decision, especially when the majority of the fps shooter games will likely be not allowed at the event. Industry insider Slasher wrote that FPS/Shooters will not be included.

Although he speculated that games like League of Legends, Rocket League, Street Fighter, Tekken, NBA2K, FIFA, and mobile games will be a part of the event which does boast a large gaming community, so there might be hope this time around. Furthermore, the list isn’t official.

A huge step for Esports?

CEO of popular esports org, GenG, Arnold Hur called the decision a big move for the Esports industry. “This may not matter much to the average esports fan, but this has huge implications for government & educational support for esports at all levels. Whether it’s renting a venue for a match in Seoul or receiving course credit for an esports/gaming industry course, this is big,” wrote.

There is truth in his words, as while multiple governments across the globe may not take esports seriously or consider it work investing in standalone, being a part of the Olympics may change their perspective. This can further promote esports across the country and could become even bigger.
