Valve has now updated how the old Steam Family sharing works with the new Steam Families. Previously in beta, it is now available to everyone. This new feature will deprecate the older Steam Family Sharing, so players will need to set up a new family. A notable feature is that multiple people can now play games from the same library.

The Steam Families is the same as the old Family Sharing but provides better quality of life features and much more freedom and control. Players can either join as an adult or a child and will have admin access depending on the role. Setting up a family is also quite easy, although there can only be six members at a time in a family.

Here’s how you can join Steam Families in 5 easy steps

1. Open Steam and click on the icon in the top left corner.
2. Select settings and a window will pop up, select Family.
3. Click on Manage your Steam Family, players can either create a family or request to join others.
4. Click on Join a Family to request an invitation from others.
5. Creating a Family is simple, just click on Create name your Family and invite members.

Once the invite is sent, the creator of the group will need to confirm and that person will be an official family member. With how convenient Steam has made the new Family Sharing, there are a few things players need to bear in mind.

Firstly, only invite trusted players, as someone cheating while playing a game from the family share library will get banned alongside the owner of the game. Second, Family members can only be from the same country and sharing a game ultimately depends on the eligibility set by the developer, but a majority of great games are available.

Lastly, removing a family member or someone leaving will lock the family slot for an entire year, meaning no new member will be able to fill the space during that time. Additionally, the person leaving will also be locked out for an entire year before joining another family. This is likely done to prevent families from hopping between friends to share video games.
