Assassin's Creed Shadows has been long doused in controversy related to historical accuracy, gameplay, or the protagonist Yasuke himself, who has been a central focus. The criticism started with the first reveal of the game, which features dual protagonists, ‘Yasuke and Naoe’. While Naoe did not receive as much heat, Yasuke portrayed a black samurai, which started a controversy.

Some people called out Ubisoft for historical inaccuracy with claims that Yasuke was not a real Samurai. In addition to that, there were also racist remarks against the character, along with DEI allegations claiming that the character is included to check the diversity box in the game.
Watching community outcry Ubisoft also issued a response stating that Assassin's Creed Shadows is a fictional story inspired by real historical figures. Since not much is known about Yasuke, the developers have portrayed him as a Samurai.
Gamers react to racist remarks against Yasuke
Fed up with the complaints and racist remarks, the other side of the community has called this a big issue with the current gaming audience. A user named ‘KvasirTheOld’ talked about the current state of the gaming community and how some people are nitpicking everything.
“I've been a gamer for my whole life, but I've never seen people act more feral about a game than they did with Shadows. Their ugly character surfaced, or more like was allowed to surface because the general hate cloud above this game,” the user wrote.

Several others agreed that the hate against Assassin's Creed Shadows is vastly exaggerated by the general hate against Ubisoft. The general advice people gave was to stay away from opinions and play the game they want, which seems to be the way to go in modern gaming.
Yasuke is a black historical figure from Japan who was under daimyō Oda Nobunaga. Not much is known about the character, which prompted Ubisoft to portray him as a samurai working together with Shinobi to tell a new story in the franchise.
What is DEI in video games?
DEI stands for diversity, equity, and inclusion, something that has been a major topic in the gaming industry. Companies often include characters from different races, ethnicities, and genders to make the game feel welcome for everyone; however, the way of implementation has been highly debated.
