Team Liquid recently bagged Dota 2 The International (TI) 2024 or TI 13 championship after taking down Gamin Gladiator twice. This is the second consecutive time Gamin Gladiator has failed to lift the trophy. Viewership-wise, TI 13 did improve upon the overall peak viewership compared to TI 12. The tournament saw a peak viewership of over 1.5 million.
Despite that, the average viewership for T13 remained lower compared to previous years. For comparison, TI12 saw an average viewership of over 540,000 while TI13 saw the number reach 469,000. This also marks the third consecutive year of a decline in Dota 2 viewership.
The data comes from escharts who have been one of the most reliable sources. Having a bigger number does mean that the tournament did attract some new faces. On the other hand, the average numbers tell us that retaining them have not been as successful.

What is causing a decline in viewership numbers for TI?
While the decline is miniscule, it does raise the question of why? Dota 2 is one of the most popular esports title and compared to earlier iterations, the viewership is lower. Let’s check out possible reasons for why one of the most beloved game hasn’t set any new records.
1. Competition
Possibly the biggest factor affecting Dota 2 TI, there have been a rise in competition for the MOBA esports sector, including mobile games. League of Legends hold the viewership record of 6.4 million, while Mobile Legends Bang Bang is sitting at 5 million peak viewers. Besides, Valve does not even promote their games, unlike other companies who spend millions on marketing.
2. Entry Barrier
While anyone can learn Dota 2, the vast roster with characters having unique abilities, complex mechanics that have a learning curve, and the community might stop new players from entering. It is considered is one of the most complex MOBA out there.
3. Accessibility
Along with its complexity, Dota 2 is also only accessible through PC. In comparison, Mobile Legends Bang Bang, League of Legends Wild Rift are available on mobile devices which allow MOBA lovers to access games any time they want.
