Sri Lanka are set to tour England next for a three-match Test series which is due to begin on the 21st of August. Ahead of the tour, the Sri Lankan side has shown its concerns over the security measures due to the internal unrest in the United Kingdom.
There has been a wave of massive protests over the immigration laws in the country. People have taken to the streets and there has been large-scale rioting which has taken place in the last few weeks.
ESPN CRICINFO carried a report where the visitors have relayed their fears to the hosts. One unnamed Sri Lankan player while speaking to the website was quoted as saying “Most of the issues seem not to be close to where we are, but everyone is still a little concerned. We can’t really go out to dinner or do anything like that”
Riots in England makes Sri Lankan team vary
Well-known website ESPNCRICINFO also went onto quote the unnamed Sri Lankan player who said “Mostly, we stay in the hotel. No one wants to run into trouble and get beaten up. We have asked the board to try and ask for some security for us until the main team arrives, but haven’t heard anything back yet,”
The Sri Lankan team are going on the tour in an upbeat mood having beaten India to win their 1st ODI series in 27 years. The final game of the series saw the Lankans win by a massive 110-run margin to win the series 2-0.
Meanwhile, Sri Lankan manager Mahinda Halangoda has spoken to the ECB about the issue. The particular concern seems to be over the situation in Manchester which is the venue for the opening game.
Mahinda Halangoda said “I raised the issue with them, but the ECB responded very quickly and sent us their comprehensive security arrangements. We’ll be having a security liaison on the tour from them as well,”
The first leg of the three-Test tour of Sri Lanka begins in Manchester on the 21st. The tour then moves to London where the second Test will be played at Lord’s starting on the 29th. The final game of the series will be played at the Oval which begins on 6th September.
