What is Red Card in cricket introduced in CPL 2023?

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2023 came up with a new rule to tackle the issue of slow-over rate by introducing the Red Card to cricket. The Red Card, just like football, is used in cricket to stop the bowlers from bowling late in a match. This new rule was started in 2023 and hasn't been adopted by any other leagues in the world, even though it's a good way of stopping the slow-over rate.

As per this rule, if a bowler is not bowling within the stipulated time frame mentioned, the captain of that particular team will have to send one player out of the ground for some time and they will be playing with only 10 players present on the field. This exact rule is that if a team is behind the over rate by the 17th over, they'll be given a warning, and one fielder will be called up inside the 30-year circle in the 18th and 19th over.

However, if the issue stays the same, one player will be removed from the field in the 20th over. While this may sound bad, it did help the teams and the bowlers to keep a check on the time and not bowl outside the given time. In the ongoing CPL 2024 edition between St Kitts and Nevis Patriots vs. Trinbago Knight Riders, the Patriots received a Red Card from the on-field umpire and had to send one player out due to a slow over-rate.

The batters coming here find it favourable: Nicholas Pooran

In the same match, the Knight Riders won the game by 44 runs after scoring 250 runs in the first innings. It became a bit difficult for the Patriots to chase such a huge target when the players got out cheaply. Nicholas Pooran was the Player of the Match for destroying the Patriot's bowling attack and smashing nine sixes and seven boundaries. He's one of the most dangerous players, and he proved it in the recent match.

"250 on that track gave us a chance. The batters coming here find it favourable. The start was brilliant. I tried to play the match ups keeping the wind factor in mind. Was trying to take it as deep as possible. On a small ground, the batters can get carried away," said Nicholas Pooran.
