India started their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with a comfortably 8-wicket win in the campaign opener against Ireland. India skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and asked the Irish men to bat first. Batting first, Ireland couldn’t survive strongly against the Indian pace attack in the first innings.

Interestingly, none of the Indian pacers went wicketless, including three wickets claimed by the star all-rounder Hardik Pandya at the cost of 27 runs in his 4 overs. Besides him, Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah also bagged 2 wickets each, alongside one wicket each picked by Mohammed Siraj and spinner Axar Patel.

On the back of these amazing bowling performances, the men in blue bundled out Ireland at the score of just 96 runs in 16 overs.

While chasing the target, India had a shaky start as they lost former skipper Vira Kohli only in the third over just at the individual score of 1 run off 5 balls. But then came a crucial and match-defining partnership of 54 runs for the second wicket between wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant and skipper Rohit Sharma before the latter retired hurt after scoring half-century (52 runs off 37 balls, with 4 fours and 3 sixes). Besides him, star wicketkeeper-batter Pant also scored an all-important 36 runs off 26 balls, with 3 fours and 2 sixes.

Riding on these two decisive knocks from Pant and Rohit, India comfortably chased down the target in 12.2 overs, scoring 97 runs for the loss of 2 wickets and won the match by a big margin of 8 wickets to give a winning start to their World T20 2024 campaign. The veteran pacer Jasprit Bumrah won the 'Player of the Match award for his brilliant spell!

Notably, India skipper Rohit Sharma has achieved a few milestones in this match as he became the third all-time highest run-scorer in the history of T20 World Cup (1,015), surpassing Chris Gayle; interestingly, he is now just a run behind former Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene to become the second all-time highest run-scorer in T20 WC history just after his teammate Virat Kohli. Besides that, Rohit also became the only batter in international cricket to hit 600 sixes.
