In what seemed to be a shocking and unexpected piece of news for the cricket fans and cricket experts throughout the entire cricketing fraternity, the legendary India batter and former Test skipper, Virat Kohli, announced his retirement from Test cricket. The Indian batting stalwart bid adieu to the longest format of the game with a heartfelt post from his official Instagram handle.
Amidst the debates and discussions on Kohli’s retirement, Delhi’s Ranji Coach Sarandeep Singh came up with the startling and shocking revelations, recalling his conversation with the former India skipper.
“He wanted to hit 4-5 centuries in the England series” – Sarandeep Singh
Sarandeep also revealed the 36-year-old was highly pumped up for the upcoming five-match Test series against England. He had a goal of hitting almost 4-5 centuries on the England tour, alongside playing a few games for India A.
“I spoke to Virat a few weeks ago and asked if he'd play county cricket to prepare for the England series. I'll play 2 India A matches in England. I want to hit 4-5 centuries in the England series, like I did in 2018 when he came to play the Ranji match," Sarandeep Singh was quoted as saying on Star Sports.
Furthermore, Singh also expressed shock at the timing of Kohli’s announcement of Test retirement. He also added that the batting great was gearing up hard for the upcoming high-stake series against England series.
“Yes, definitely, Virat Kohli’s sudden retirement has surprised everyone right now. We were not even thinking that he was going to take retirement from Test cricket. And you can say that he’s 700-800 runs behind (10,000 runs), but it’s not about that. We need to think about what happened that he took retirement so early. There was nothing indicative of that before. The stature of Virat Kohli is too big, and he didn’t get a good send-off,” said Sarandeep Singh to PTI.
