India lost the first game of the 3-match series to New Zealand to go 1-0 down in the series. Rohit Sharma and his side suffered a huge blow as their qualification for the World Test Championships finals has faced a huge jolt. Will Young and Rachin Ravindra ensured that the visitors reached the target with just 2 wickets down.

Jasprit Bumrah was the star pacer for India with both the New Zealand wickets falling. The 2nd wicket was that of opener Devon Conway when Bumrah bowled round the wicket and hit the Kiwi batter on his pads. The umpire didn’t budge as Rohit Sharma didn’t seem keen on taking the DRS.

That’s when Virat Kohli was seen talking to India’s skipper and the decision was sent upstairs. The third umpire saw there was no edge of the bat and the ball was hitting the stumps. This gave India their 2nd wicket of the game as Conway was back in the hut for 17 runs from 39 balls.

India heads to Pune looking to keep proud record alive

After being bowled out for 46, the home team made a great comeback scoring 462 in their 2nd innings. New Zealand had taken an overall lead of 356 thanks to a century by Rachin Ravindra.

In the second innings, the home team suffered a huge collapse to lose their last seven wickets for just 54 runs. Sarfaraz Khan’s 150 and Rishabh Pant with 99 added 177 runs for the 4th wicket. At that stage, it looked like India would be able to give the Kiwis a target of even more than 250 on the board which would have made it difficult.

Rohit Sharma will be worried with the form of KL Rahul who scored 0 and 12 in the game. The 32-year-old faced a lot of criticism from fans after yet another inconsistent showing with the bat. Both sides now move to Pune where the 2nd Test match is slated to begin on 24th October.

India needs to win the game to tie the series and keep their proud home record intact. Rohit and his men will want to win the game and move to Mumbai with the series tied at 1-1. A win in the series will put India very close to the WTC Final qualification spot.
