Recalling some of the unique umpires in international cricket
David Shepherd was one of the most loved umpires during his long and illustrious career as an official. Shepherd was known to hop whenever a team’s score reached 111, or simply known as the Nelson. This routine was done till a batter or team didn’t get past the Nelson.
While David Shepherd was known for hilarious hops for superstition, Billy Bowden was known for his unique way of officiating. When a batter was out the New Zealander would raise his finger in a crooked manner to signal the decision. Many commentators began to notice this whenever Bowden was officiating.
Bowden’s method of signalling four or six was also unique, and many cricket fans fell in love with the antics they were seeing. Funnily, during an Australia vs New Zealand T20 game, Bowden showed former Australian legend Glenn McGrath to leave everyone in splits. The incident happened as McGrath bowled an underarm ball in jest towards the end of the game.
