Australia won the 1st T20I against England which was played in Southampton on Wednesday. Travis Head was the hero with the bat as he scored 59 runs from a mere 23 balls which included 8 fours and 4 sixes. The Australian opener gave special attention to Sam Curran hitting him for 30 runs in an over.

Phil Salt gave the ball to Sam Curran to bowl the 5th over of the innings. At the end of four overs, Australia were placed at 41/0 with Matthew Short and Travis Head batting. Sam Curran began by bowling a short ball which the Australian batter hit for a four. The second ball also was carted for a four beyond the point region.

The next three balls went for three successive sixes as the England pacer was lost for ideas. The final ball of the over went for the third four of the over to make it 30 runs and a miserable start to the day for Sam Curran.

Australia wins the 1st T20 by 28 runs

It was Phil Salt who won the toss and chose to bowl first. Matthew Short and Travis Head added 86 runs for the opening wicket in just 6 overs. Saqib Mahmood then dismissed Head for 59 caught by Jordan Cox. Adil Rashid then got the wicket of skipper Mitchell Marsh for 2 while Liam Livingstone dismissed Matthew Short for 41.

The Australian middle order kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Josh Inglis with 37 steadied the ship as the visitors posted 179 on the board. The best bowler for England was Liam Livingstone who picked 3/22 from his 3 overs.

Needing 180 to win, England were bowled out for 151 in the final over of the innings. Liam Livingstone was the best batter for the home team with 37 off 27 balls. Sean Abbott was the best bowler for Australia with figures of 3/28 from his 3.2 overs. Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa picked 2 wickets each while Xavier Bartlett, Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis picked a wicket each.

Speaking at the end of the game, Phil Salt said “hey played well. They got a start. We dragged it back towards the end. When the ball starts flying like that, we could have done better. Maybe some clarity in the next game.”

Winning captain Mitchell Marsh said “Pretty exciting. Head is a special talent. The par score was about 200. Very lucky to have some of the guys. We applied pressure. Was a great wicket. I thought we made good use of the powerplay”
