Team India are set to take on Australia in the opening Test of the five-match series at Perth on Friday. One of the players who will be closely watched is Indian wicketkeeper and batter Rishabh Pant. The 27-year-old is on his third tour of Australia and made a huge impact in both of his previous two tours.

Rishabh Pant broke into the side in 2018 as he made his Test debut with a bang at the age of 20. India and Australia played the first ever Test match at the new Perth Stadium which had replaced the old WACA ground. Tim Paine had won the toss and chose to bat first and Australia scored 326 in their first innings.

27-year-old Risbabh Pant batting at number 7 for India scored 36 runs from 50 balls with two fours and a six. Facing Nathan Lyon in the 102nd over of India’s first innings, Pant stepped down the track and smashed the ball deep into the stands. At that time India were placed at 265/8 still trailing Australia by 61 runs. It was in the same innings that Virat Kohli scored 123 runs and did his famous 'let the bat do the talking' gesture.

Nathan Lyon had the last laugh though as he dismissed Pant caught by Mitchell Starc. Australia ended up taking a lead of 43 runs and later set India a target of 287 to win. Mohammed Shami took 6/56 with the ball to register his best-ever figures in Test cricket. India were all out for 140 to lose the match by 146 runs as Australia levelled the series 1-1.

Australian players' previous comments on Rishabh Pant

27-year-old Rishabh Pant has been one of India’s main players in the last few years. Pant’s importance was felt when he missed an entire year due to rehabilitation after his accident. The youngster has become a critical part of India’s batting order, especially in Test cricket.

Just before the start of the series, Mitchell Marsh during his chat with Star Sports had said “He's a ripping bloke. I wish he was Australian. He's obviously been through a lot over the last few years, and it's been a hell of a comeback. He's a positive guy, still really young, and he loves winning. He's highly competitive for someone who has the persona of being relaxed and always laughing and smiling. He's got that big smile,”

Australia’s star batter Travis Head while speaking to the same channel opined “The Indian cricketer I believe is most Australian would be Rishabh Pant. I think the way he goes about his aggressive nature and his work ethic would make him very enjoyable to play with,”

So far Rishabh Pant has played 7 Test matches in Australia and scored 624 runs with an average of 62.4. The left-handed batter has hit one century which is 159 not out during the 2019 Test in Sydney. In his last appearance in Australia, Pant had scored an unbeaten 89 to help India win the Brisbane Test and win the series 2-1.
