Indian pacer Mohammed Shami marked his return to ICC tournaments the same way he had signed off. The 34-year-old got the key wicket of opening batter Soumya Sarkar for zero on the final ball of the first over. Shami had the batter in trouble with his swing in the air with the new ball. Sarkar had left a ball that nearly hit his off-stump just the ball before.
Soumya Sarkar wasn’t as lucky as he poked at a ball that came in and KL Rahul completed an easy catch. Shami was the leading wicket-taker during the 2023 ODI World Cup with 24 scalps. The veteran seamer is shouldering the pace attack with Jasprit Bumrah not being part of the squad due to injury.

Bangladeshi skipper Najmul Shanto was out for a duck after facing just two balls as his side was reduced to two runs for the loss of two wickets.
Arshdeep Singh misses out as Bangladesh bat first
It was Shanto who won the toss and chose to bat first on what was a clear day for cricket in Dubai. Rohit Sharma had said at the toss time that he would have wanted to field first as well had he won the toss. Left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh wasn’t considered for the game as Harshit Rana got to play the game.
Speaking at the toss, Bangladeshi cricket captain Shanto said, “We would like to bat first. Looks a good wicket so we want to put runs on the board. We have play good cricket today and the boys are confident.”
Rohit Sharma said, “I would have fielded first. We have played a few years back here so we felt ball comes on better under lights. All looking good. Everyone is fit and fine to go. Let's hope we start well. There is no looking back, every game becomes very important in this tournament.”
Speaking before the game, Bangladesh skipper Najmul Shanto addressed the media, where he said, "Basically, I think if you look in this format, our team is quite balanced and we believe we can beat any team in this tournament. All teams are capable of winning this trophy but I am someone not thinking about the opponents much. If we execute our plan properly, we can beat any team in any day.”
