WATCH: South Africa players pumped up in dressing room after narrow win over England in Super 8s

The recent win helped South Africa top the Group 2 points table with 4 points and a +0.625 net run rate. However, that does not guarantee them a place in the semi-finals.

South Africa moved a step closer to the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup after a nervy win over England in St Lucia on Friday. The defending champions failed to chase down a target of 164 runs as the Proteas bowlers held their nerve to secure a narrow seven-run victory in a thrilling final over.

After the game, the South African players were in a celebratory mood in the dressing room. In a video that has gone viral on social media, the players are seen pumped up and confident of making it to the final four.

“It’s been a great game. Great to get over the line and hoping for one more victory and then into the semis,” fast bowler Anrich Nortje is heard saying in the video.

“That was a very good game. I’m sure anyone who watched that game was on the edge of their seat. I’m just glad that we pulled that through in the end. A very good win against a very good team,” commented Kagiso Rabada.

What are South Africa's chances of securing a semi-final spot?

Aiden Markram and Co. are unbeaten in the tournament so far. They defeated United States (USA) in their first Super 8 match and England in the second. The recent win helped South Africa top the Group 2 points table with 4 points and a +0.625 net run rate. However, that does not guarantee them a place in the semi-finals.

South Africa's final Super 8 match is against West Indies, who are also strong contenders to qualify from Group 2. A win against co-hosts Windies will take them straight into the knockouts. If they lose, their qualifying situation will depend entirely on the net run rate (NRR).

In this case, both West Indies and South Africa will have four points. The former already has a healthy NRR of +1.814 to seal a berth in the semis. If England fails to defeat the United States in their final match, South Africa can qualify even if they lose against West Indies. In the other case, South Africa’s NRR should not drop below the defending champions.
