Indian Cricket team skipper in the Test and ODI format, Rohit Sharma, is celebrating his 38th birthday on Wednesday, April 30. However, there was one memorable moment that took place during the second edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) where Rohit showed his bowling ability.

Playing for the Deccan Chargers against the Mumbai Indians, Rohit was asked to bowl the 16th over of the innings by the then captain of the Deccan Chargers, Adam Gilchrist, in the 32nd match played in Centurion. What happened next was pure magic as Rohit ended up taking a hat-trick. Abhishek Nayar, Harbhajan Singh and JP Duminy were the batters who fell prey to his magnificent spin bowling.

While Duminy was caught behind, Nayar and Harbhajan were clean-bowled. Gilchrist’s move was proved a masterstroke, which completely changed the course of the game as MI were reduced from 101/4 to 101/7. The Chargers went on to win the match by 19 runs, with Rohit winning the Player of the Match for his 38-run knock and a four-wicket haul.

A career full of milestones and records

Rohit is known to be one of the most explosive opening batters in the history of white-ball cricket. Playing as a lower-middle order batter in the initial phase of his career, Rohit was asked to open the innings for the first time during the Champions Trophy 2013 under the then captain MS Dhoni. Since then, he has never looked back and has created multiple records as an opener.

Some of the biggest milestones of Rohit’s career include his three double-centuries in the ODI format and the highest individual score in an ODI match, 264. He is also the fastest Indian to score a century in the T20Is, which came in just 35 deliveries. However, his recent achievements as the captain of the Indian team speak volumes about his leadership skills.

He led the Indian team to their second T20 World Cup title in 2024 and announced his retirement shortly after that. He also led the team to their third Champions Trophy title in 2025, helping the team heal the wounds of India losing the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia.
