Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium got one more addition in its glorified stands in the name of the former legendary Mumbai cricketers, who represented India at the highest level of the game. The Divecha Pavilion Level 3 has now been renamed as the ‘Rohit Sharma stand’. The new stand on the name of India’s legendary white-ball skipper Rohit Sharma.
The decision was taken in the 86th General Meeting of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) to honour the outstanding contributions and unforgettable cricketing career of Rohit Sharma. The former India Test skipper will now join the former legendary cricketers from Mumbai, Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Vijay Merchant. Notably, these Mumbai greats went on to represent India at the highest level of the game for a long time in their international career.
MCA felicitates and honours Rohit Sharma on the special day
Rohit Sharma was also present at the inauguration ceremony of the stand in his name at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. He shared the stage with the Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, former MCA president Sharad Pawar, and current MCA president Ajinkya Naik.
IPL’s Mumbai Indians team was also present at the Wankhede Stadium on this special occasion of Rohit Sharma Stand’s inauguration. Earlier in the history of the tournament, Rohit Sharma had led the franchise to win five IPL titles under his captaincy, and currently, he is associated with the team as a senior player. MCA also felicitated the former MI skipper and the batting stalwart for his unforgettable contributions.
Rohit Sharma’s family was also there at the Wankhede Stadium to witness this ‘once in a lifetime’ moment. During his speech, Rohit said, “I am very grateful and honoured to have a stand named after me.” Furthermore, he also spoke about his family, alongside extending his gratitude for family's support.
