Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja came out to bat on the 3rd day of MCG with India’s overnight score on 164/5. The visitors are still trailing the hosts by 310 runs in the 4th match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. On Saturday, Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant signaled his early intentions with the bat against Pat Cummins.

In the first ball of the 49th over, Pant charged down the track and smashed Cummins for a boundary. This is likely to give the 27-year-old some confidence who has been uncharacteristically quiet with the bat during the Australian tour. Pant was one of the players earmarked to do well with the bat before the series began.

Both Pant and Jadeja will hope to bat longer and help take India to a decent total on the board. On Friday, Yashasvi Jaiswal who is celebrating his 23rd birthday on Saturday was run out for 82 runs. Virat Kohli did not respond to a call for quick single that saw Jaiswal’s innings end.

Make or break day for India on Saturday

The third day of the MCG Test match could very well define India’s future in the WTC and also the BGT series. Steve Smith’s 140 in the first innings along with vital contributions by Sam Konstas, Usman Khawaja, and Marnus Labuschagne led the hosts to 474 runs.

Rohit Sharma failed with the bat yet again on Friday after he was dismissed for 3 while trying to pull Cummins omly to be caught by Boland. Aussie skipper struck once more when he got the huge wicket of KL Rahul in the last ball before Tea. Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal then added 102 for the third wicket before the latter was run-out.

Virat Kohli himself was out an over later caught by Alex Carey off Boland for 36. The veteran pacer then rounded off the day with the scalp of Akash Deep for a 13-ball duck. All hopes will hinge on the overnight batting duo with Nitish Reddy and Washington Sundar to follow.
