Afghanistan made their debut in the Champions Trophy competition and took on South Africa in their opening match. Rashid Khan who came into the game with 198 ODI wickets couldn’t get any scalps from his ten overs. The 26-year-old was hit for 59 runs by South African batters as Temba Bavuma and his side kept piling on the pressure.

Rashid Khan was seen showing off his football juggling skills early in the spell. Afghanistan’s star player could be seen keeping his eyes on the ball as he did keep-ups much to the amazement of the crowd. The moment earned a huge roar from the fans in the crowd as soon as it came on the big screen.

Earlier in the day Temba Bavuma won the toss and chose to bat first at the national stadium in Karachi. This was the first match in Group B of the Champions Trophy 2025. The second match from the group will be played on Saturday as Australia take on England in Lahore.

South Africa on the cusp of huge total versus Afghanistan 

Afghanistan were asked to bowl first by Temba Bavuma when he called the toss right. The South African skipper revealed that Heinrich Klaasen was missing the game due to injury. Bavuma said “We will have a bat first. Looks a bit different from what we have been experiencing here, not sure how will it react. Will try to post a competitive total on the board. I have a lot of confidence in our bowling attack”

Hasmatullah Shahidi said “If we had won the toss, we would have batted first but the toss is not in our hands and we have to play good cricket. I will be happier if we start well and take some wickets in the powerplay and give some momentum to our bowlers in the middle overs.

Tony De Zorzi was out early for 11 runs when he was caught by Azmatullah Omarzai off Mohammad Nabi. The South Africans then had skipper Bavuma and opening batter Rickelton add 129 runs for the second wicket. Bavuma was out after scoring 58 runs as he became the second wicket for Mohammad Nabi.
