South Africa and England met on Saturday in the final match of the Group B encounter in the Champions Trophy 2025. South Africa have to win the match to make it to the semi-finals of the tournament along with Australia. England are already out of the tournament after losing to Afghanistan.

Phil Salt ended his campaign on yet another disappointing note after he was dismissed for just eight runs. Marco Jansen had already conceded nine runs from five balls in the first over of the game. The left-arm seamer bowled a short ball, which Salt tried to pull and managed to give Rassie van der Dussen a simple catch. Salt, who is set to play for RCB in the coming IPL season, has been in woeful form with the bat in the last few matches.

Jamie Smith was the second wicket to fall when he was out for a duck to give Jansen his second wicket. The 24-year-old then made it three overs inside the first ten over after getting the big wicket of Ben Duckett for 24 as Jansen took an easy return catch. After ten overs, England were 62/3, with Jansen having picked 3/29 from five overs.

England opt to bat first in Jos Buttler’s last match as captain

It was England skipper Jos Buttler who won the toss and opted to bat first. There was just one change for the Three Lions, with Saqib Mahmood replacing injured Mark Wood. Buttler took charge of his final game as England’s white-ball skipper, having stood down from the post on Friday.

Speaking at the toss, Buttler was asked to comment on stepping down as the captain, to which he said, “I felt like it was time, so I didn't want to take more time to take that decision. It was an easy decision and I will do it for one last time; hopefully we can do well. A bit of sadness as well, it's an honour to captain your country, it's something you dream about and I have had some good moments along the way.”

South Africa made two changes to their playing XI as regular skipper Temba Bavuma and opening batter Tony de Zorzi missed the game. Aiden Markram, who is leading the side, confirmed that Tristan Stubbs will open the batting. The other change saw Heinrich Klaasen make his return after missing the match against Afghanistan.
