Former ODI World Cup winner England were knocked out of the Champions Trophy 2025 tournament on Wednesday. Joe Root waged a lone battle with the bat as he scored 111-ball 120 runs. That effort went into vain when he was dismissed by Afghanistan's all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai with just 25 balls left in the game.

Once Adil Rashid was dismissed, there was a huge celebration in Afghanistan’s camp. In the English camp though, there was massive heartbreak and disappointment. Root could be seen with tears in his eyes after the loss that signalled his team’s exit. England are the only former ODI World Cup winners yet to win the Champions Trophy title and their wait grows longer.

Root walked into bat at the fall of Jamie Smith’s wicket for nine runs in the first ball of the seventh over. Ben Duckett and England’s former skipper went on to add 68 runs for the third wicket in 63 balls. The best stand of the game was between Root and Buttler as the pair added 83 runs for the fifth wicket in 91 balls. When Root was dismissed England needed 39 runs from 25 balls for a win.

‘Am I part of the problem?’ – Jos Buttler hits back after loss to Afghanistan

England skipper Jos Buttler has been under massive pressure and the loss on Wednesday has added more misery. The 34-year-old hit back at the media after the match against Afghanistan. Buttler while addressing the media said that the results were going in his team’s favour and didn’t want to make any emotional decision.

Jos Buttler said “Yeah, I think obviously the results aren't where they need to be and I personally need to consider all possibilities. And like I said, obviously, we need to get us as a team back to where England cricket needs to be in the white ball formats. And I think I've got to work out personally am I part of the problem or am I part of the solution?

English skipper also added “I'm not going to make any emotional decisions right here, right now. You're probably not the first people I'd discuss that with. And take a little bit of time to just work out personally what I think is right. And obviously, the guys at the top are in charge and they will have their own views as well - so as I said, we need to get the team back to where it needs to be - competing for winning these tournaments,"
