17 wickets fell on the first day of the second Test match between West Indies and South Africa. The visitors were bowled out for 160 as Shamar Joseph and Jayden Seales shared 8 wickets between them. In reply the West Indians were reduced to 97/7 by the time stump were called.

The biggest moment of the opening day came when Jayden Seales was bowling to South African opener Tony De Zorzi. In the 4th ball of the fourth over the West Indian pacer got the ball to pitch on the off-stump line. Tony De Zorzi was beaten for pace as the ball went in between the bat and pad to uproot the off-stump that went for a walk.

West Indies and South Africa had played out a draw in the first Test on which had nothing for the bowlers. It was South Africa who won the toss and chose to bat first and made two changes to the team. Nandre Burger and Dane Piedt came in for Ryan Rickelton and Lungi Ngidi while Shamar Joseph came in for Kemar Roach for the hosts.

Eventful first day unfolds in Guyana

Opting to bat first, South Africa lost both their openers early as Aiden Markram fell to Shamar Joseph for 14. Skipper Temba Bavuma was out for a second ball duck as he was out LBW to Joseph to leave the Proteas at 20 for 3.

David Bedingham joined Tristan Stubbs as the pair added 37 runs for the 4th wicket in 12 overs. That stand was broken when Kavem Hodge caught Stubbs for 26 to give Jason Holder his only wicket of the innings.

Shamar Joseph then struck as he had Bedingham caught by Joshua Da Silva for 28 to make it 78 for 5. The visitors lost four more wickets for 19 runs as Shamar Joseph and Jayden Seales kept picking wickets.

South Africa reached 160 thanks to the last wicket stand of 63 between Piedt who top scored with 38 and Burger who scored 23. In reply, the West Indians were done in by the accuracy of Wiaan Mulder and the extra pace of Nandre Burger. Keacy Carty was out for 26 while Jason Holder was batting on 33 with just the bowlers left for company.
