Cricket has seen stoppage in play for a variety of reasons, right from rain to huge amounts of sunlight engulfing the ground. However, during the third T20I game between South Africa and India, play was stopped due to mass insects that had invaded the ground. The home team had played just one over and scored 7 runs in pursuit of 220 runs to win.
Hardik Pandya was running in to bowl the second over of the game as the umpires called a halt to proceedings. Suryakumar Yadav was seen talking to the on-field umpires as it was decided that it was better to walk off the field. Arshdeep Singh, who had bowled the first over in the second innings, was struggling with the sudden influx of insects.
Even the fans were seen looking disturbed by the sudden stoppage as the groundsmen began to work on the pitch. Many of the insects had landed on the pitch which forced the curators to rush with the supper soppers to do the cleanup job. The visuals seen in Centurion were unforeseen as cricket had never witnessed anything like this.
Tilak Varma’s scores emotional first T20I ton
Indian batter Tilak Varma scored his first-ever international century during the third T20I in Centurion. The 22-year-old got to the magical three-figure mark off just 51 balls with a straight four down the ground. It was a huge moment for the young batter who is trying to make his mark at the international level.
Speaking during the innings break, Varma said, “Incredible feeling to get this coming back from injury. The wicket was two-paced, and challenging at the start. After some time it went well. I was holding my shape while playing the shots. We both were under pressure. Today's knocks are important for us. Our spinners are bowling well. 200-210 is what we were looking for and we got it. Hopefully, we can defend this.”
With this century, Tilak Varma became the second youngest batter for India to score a T20I ton. In fact, Varma is the youngest Indian batter to score a T20I ton against a Test Playing nation, which came at 22 years and 5 days.
For the record, Yashasvi Jaiswal is the youngest Indian to score a century in this format against Nepal at the age of 21 years and 279 days. Team India also set a new record as they breached the 200-run mark for the 8th time in the T20 format in a calendar year.
