England's next sensation Gus Atkinson has taken the Test cricket world by storm. He became the talk of the town with his 12-wicket haul against West Indies in his debut game at the Lord's and has now followed it up with an outstanding performance with the bat against Sri Lanka

In the ongoing second Test match of the series against Sri Lanka at Lord's, Atkinson registered his name on the Lord's Honours Board, only this time with the bat.

After Joe Root had stabilized the innings for England, Atkinson played with complete freedom as he joined the former skipper in the middle. Atkinson scored 118 runs in just 115 balls, including 14 boundaries and four sixes.

He reached the landmark score with an off-drive four against Lahiru Kumara in the 93rd over of the innings. He immediately knew the ball would race to the boundary and raised his arms in joy. A video of the moment has gone viral.

Here is the moment of Gus Atkinson reaching his maiden Test hundred

The centurion was finally removed by Asitha Fernando in the 100th over. Atkinson could not generate enough power on the short-pitched delivery, and Milan Rathnayake's excellent backward diving catch did the trick for Sri Lanka.

Earlier in the game, Joe Root got his side back in the game after Sri Lanka had bagged three wickets for just 82 runs. His innings of 143 runs in 206 balls consisted of 18 boundaries.

Eventually, the home side was quickly wrapped up after Atkinson's dismissal. The three lions put on a score of 427 runs on the board. For Sri Lanka, Asitha Fernando was the pick of the bowlers as he returned five wickets for 102 runs in his 24 overs.
