Gujarat's 24-year-old left-arm spinner Siddharth Desai ran through Uttarakhand’s batting unit on Thursday. Desai ended with career best figures of 9/36 from 15 overs to bowl out the opposition for just 111 runs on the board. The left-arm spinner would have grabbed all ten wickets if not for Vishal Jayswal, who bowled last man Harsh Patwal for a duck.

Desai began his wicket-taking spree by first dismissing Priyanshu Khanduri for seven runs in the fifth over. In the very next ball, the bowler dismissed skipper R Samarth for a golden duck. On the final ball of the same over, Desai had Yuvraj Chaudhary caught by Urvil Patel for a duck.

Kunal Chandela became his fourth wicket of the innings as he was dismissed LBW for 12 runs. Desai then bowled Mayank Mishra for five runs to register his fifer before getting rid of opener Avneesh Sudha for 30. The best batter for Uttarakhand was Shashwat Dangwal, who was not out on 35 off 49 balls with five boundaries and a six.

Uttarakhand left reeling after Siddharth Desai’s heroics

Former Mumbai skipper Aditya Tare came out to bat and added 16 runs for the seventh wicket with Dangwal. That stand was broken as Desai trapped Tare right in front of the wicket for four runs. Abhay Negi could survive just four balls before he was sent back to the hut for a duck. Deepak Dhapola became the ninth wicket for Desai as the batter was out for nine runs from 19 balls with one six.

Siddharth Desai made his first-class debut for Gujarat in 2017 and has played 36 matches so far. The 24-year-old has picked up 159 wickets with 12 fifers before this game and two ten-wicket hauls in the game. The youngster is also useful with the bat having scored 406 runs with one half-century and has an average of 13.

So far this season, Siddharth Desai has picked 16 wickets with a best of 4/64 against Puducherry. With the latest haul of nine wickets, the 24-year-old bowler has taken his season’s tally to 25 wickets from six games. If he can keep up his performances, Indian selectors might give the young spinner his maiden call-up to the national side.
