Haryana batters put up a stiff fight against defending Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai on day two of the third quarter-finals in Kolkata. Skipper Ankit Kumar’s century led the team to a strong position just before tea on Sunday. Former Mumbai Indians star Shams Mulani though produced a cracking ball to bring his team back into the contest.
The incident happened in the fourth ball of the 50th over with Himanshu Rana batting on three. Mulani pitched the ball on the middle stump as it turned away from the batter to hit the top of the off-stump. The batter was left in complete shock at the prodigious amount of turn Mulani had got off the surface.

The 26-year-old scored his runs off 173 balls with 13 hits to the fence. Pacer Mohit Avasthi took the team past the 300 mark before last man Royston Dias was out for seven as Avasthi was not out on 18.
It was Mumbai who batted first and were reduced to 113/7 at one stage after lunch on day one. Mulani and Kotian then added 165 for the eighth wicket in nearly 59 overs to bring the champions back into the game. Former India star Jayant Yadav then dismissed Mulani for 91 at the fag end of the day to ensure Haryana finished on a high.

Skipper Ankit Kumar and Lakshay Dalal added 87 runs for the opening wicket to frustrate the Mumbai seamers. Shardul Thakur got the first wicket when he trapped Dalal out LBW for 34 in the final ball of the 24th over. The batter decided to take the DRS after the on-field decision went against him. The decision though stayed in the bowling team’s favour to give Mumbai a huge breakthrough.
