Irani Trophy 2024 began on Tuesday with Mumbai taking on the Rest of India at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and chose to bowl first as the start of play was delayed due to rain. Prithvi Shaw, trying to make a comeback to the national side, was out early for 4.
Mukesh Kumar induced a drive from Shaw, which was travelling quickly to the slips. Devdutt Padikkal dove to his right and plucked an amazing two handed catch. Prithvi Shaw was out for 4 runs from 7 balls with 1 hit to the fence.

Onus on Ajinkya Rahane to help Mumbai out of tough spot
Debutant Ayush Mhatre showed wide range of shots as he hit 3 fours. Veteran batter and skipper Ajinkya Rahane was his watchful self as he came out to bat. The 36-year-old batting at number 4 will hope to do well and get back into form. With the Australian tour nearing, Rahane will want to put up his hand up for selection.
Mumbai team has the services of Shreyas Iyer and Sarfaraz Khan with the latter being released from Test duties. Shardul Thakur is making his comeback to cricket after missing the last few months due to injuries.
Rest of India side has some of the best players who were part of Duleep Trophy 2024. Ishan Kishan is part of the rest of India squad with Gaikwad leading the side. Both players weren’t considered for selection for the India vs Bangladesh T20I series.
Speaking at the toss, Gaikwad said “We will bowl first. Little bit of moisture. We want to make first use. Totally ready. We have been missing red ball cricket. Everyone eager to play. Three pacers and two spinners are playing”
Mumbai skipper Rahane on the other hand said “We were looking to bat. Toss you can't control as a captain. You need to do well every session in day's cricket. We are ready. I spent two and a half months playing county cricket. Got some game time under my belt. Preparation wise, every one is ready”
