In what seems to be a big blow for the Sunrisers Hyderabad, star spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out from the remainder of the Indian Premier League 2024. Notably, he was picked by the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2024 mini-auction for an amount of INR 1.50 crores.
The news of Hasaranga getting ruled out from the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League has also been confirmed by Ashley de Silva, the CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Hasaranga will be going through rehabilitation next month as the Islanders will be hoping for his comeback in the national T20I side for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Interestingly, Hasaranga was supposed to join the SRH camp within a week. But it won’t be happening as the left heel injury forced the exit of the Sri Lankan star from the Indian Premier League 2024.
“He is not taking part in the IPL as he needs to do some rehabilitation after meeting the podiatrist,” Sunday Times Sri Lanka quoted SLC CEO Ashley de Silva as saying.
“There’s a swelling in the heel and he has been playing with injections. So, he has decided to get this issue sorted out before the World Cup (T20) and informed us of his decision to skip the IPL this year,” he added later.
Sunrisers Hyderabad will now look ahead to find the perfect replacement for Wanindu Hasaranga in the remainder of the Indian Premier League 2024. They might go ahead with some young Indian spinners drafted in the IPL 2024 mini-auction.
Before getting picked by the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Hasaranga was active for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League. He played 26 matches and bowled in all 26 innings of these matches, scalping 35 wickets with a strike rate of 21.37 and an economy rate of 8.13. He also claimed a five-wicket haul and registered a best performance of 5/18 to his name in his Indian Premier League career.
Hasaranga’s recovery from the heel injury will be very crucial for Sri Lanka as they are eyeing the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
