Former Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli ended the Australian tour as the stand-in skipper during the SCG Test match. The 36-year-old was leading the side in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who had been sidelined due to reported back spasms. Australia won the game by 6 wickets to become the second team to enter the WTC finals.

Once the game was done, cameras spotted Kohli hugging head coach Gautam Gambhir. The two stars have had a tense relationship in the past, having clashed during the IPL. After Gambhir took over as the coach, the former has gotten along well with Kohli over the past few months.

The emotional display by Kohli came out of the blue and left fans wondering if the 36-year-old is set to retire from Test cricket. Kohli ended the series with 190 runs from 9 innings with a best of 100 not out during the Perth Test match. Kohli has been in the news for falling to the off-stump line on 8 occasions out of the 9 innings he batted during the series.

Gautam Gambhir fails to speak on veteran duo’s Test future

Head coach Gautam Gambhir, while addressing the media, was asked about the Test futures of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The 43-year-old didn’t reply much but just stated, “I can’t talk about the future of any player. It’s up to them as well. What I can say is that they still have the hunger, they still have the passion, they are tough people.”

Gambhir also added, “And hopefully they can continue to take it and bring it forward. But ultimately, as we all know, that whatever they plan, they will plan for the best.” The answer added more confusion about Rohit and Virat’s future.

One of the biggest problems Kohli faces is the fact that he has consistently outfished deliveries outside off stump. The 36-year-old was twice dismissed by Scott Boland in the game in similar fashion to end his final Test appearance in Australia by scoring a total of 23 runs. With India set to play England in six months, Kohli or Rohit are yet to state their next course of action.  -
