The Indian cricket team’s senior members are set to be scrutinized in the next few months. Skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, along with Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin, are set to be put under the pump. According to reports carried by PTI, the four players' spots are under threat if India fails to make it to the WTC finals.
While speaking to PTI, One unnamed BCCI source said, “Stocks will be taken certainly and it could be informal since the team leaves for Australia on November 10. But this has been a huge debacle but, with Australia series round the corner and the squad already announced, there won't be any tinkering."
It was a disappointing series with the bat for both Indian stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. On the other hand, R. Ashwin picked 9 wickets with the ball and scored 51 runs. Ravindra Jadeja picked ten wickets in Mumbai but had picked just six wickets in the previous two games in Bengaluru and Pune.
BCCI doesn’t want to repeat mistakes of the past
After the 3-0 whitewash loss to New Zealand, the BCCI wants to start the phase-out process. In 2011, India faced a 4-0 series of white-washes during their tour of England and Australia. This was followed by the retirements of Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, and Sachin Tendulkar.
The BCCI source also said, “But if India doesn't qualify for WTC final in England, one can rest assured that all four super seniors won't be on that flight to UK for the ensuing five-Test series. In any case, all four have likely played their final Test at home together.”
Sai Sudharsan has been in top run-scoring form with the bat in the longest formats. The 23-year-old batter scored a century for India A during the recent game against Australia A. Washington Sundar can be a ready replacement for Ashwin after the 25-year-old impressed against New Zealand.
As far as replacement for Rohit at the top order goes, there are two players in contention. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Abhimanyu Eeswaran have been consistent run scorers in domestic cricket. Axar Patel and Manav Suthar could be the players who could replace Ravindra Jadeja in the team.
