Many comparisons have been made over the years between MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma when it comes to Indian cricket team captaincy. Dhoni set the benchmark by winning three ICC trophies during his captaincy tenure. While Kohli failed to win a major tournament, Rohit led India to glory in the 2024 T20 World Cup and aims for more in the coming years.

Veteran India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin compared the captaincy styles of the star trio. Although Dhoni leads the charts in terms of achievements, Ashwin has put Rohit at the top by pointing out a key area that he found missing in both Kohli and Dhoni.

In an interview with Vimal Kumar, Ashwin mentioned that while Kohli and Dhoni were tactically strong, Rohit works more in this area. The off-spinner added that the Mumbai cricketer always keeps the atmosphere of the team calm and harmonious.

"2-3 things are nice about Rohit's captaincy. He always keeps the environment of the team light. He makes an effort to keep it light. And he stays very balanced and tactically he is strong. Both Dhoni and Virat were also tactically strong but Rohit works more on the tactics,” said Ashwin in an interview with Vimal Kumar.

Rohit always backs the players: Ashwin

Ashwin, who has so far played 281 international matches across three formats, has played under all three captains. According to him, Rohit backs every player and he also knows the strengths and weaknesses of his teammates.

“If there is any big match or series coming up, Rohit sits with the analytics team and coach and prepares for it, like what's the weakness of a particular batsman, what's the plan of a bowler. That's his strength but he always keeps the environment of the team light and backs the players. If he selects a player in the XI, he backs them 100%. I have played most of my career with these three captains,” the Tamil Nadu cricketer added.
