Young Lucknow Super Giants pacer Mayank Yadav had a roller-coaster season in the Indian Premier League 2024 so far. He amazed everyone with his bowling skills in his first two matches, winning the Player of the Match award both times. What stood out was his ability to consistently bowl very fast, even exceeding 150 kilometres per hour.

However, in his third match, Mayank faced a setback. After bowling just one over, he had to leave the field due to an injury. The injury ruled him out for almost a week raising questions over his fitness and abilities.

Fans and Experts who were calling him India’s upcoming star are now questioning his fitness. Things have changed now and Mayank would need to make a strong comeback. However, former India pacer Atul Wassan called on these experts and fans.

‘You need some hard bones’, says Atul Wassan

Wassan said that Indians tend to get overexcited after watching a young pacer. He further added that people want these young guns to play for India even before they are fully ready. While speaking with a media house Wassan said, “It is the problem with the Indian mindset, whenever a young speedster comes into the picture.”

“They get overexcited and want him to play the events like the World Cup or similar kinds of big events. They become judges just based on two matches. Your height, weight and size play a crucial role as a pacer, you need some hard bones to survive as an out-and-out pacer."

The 56-year-old cricketer turned commentator name-dropped former India pacer Varun Aron and drew a comparison with Mayank Yadav. He said, "I am saying it all because if a guy gets injured, they throw him out. A similar kind of thing happened with Varun Aaron, he got overexcited and it went on to cost him. Kapil Dev could also bowl the out-and-out pace bowling but he knew that these guys would overhype him and would also push him aside after getting injured."
